How do binaural beats work?

When you listen through headphones to two slightly different tones — for example 200 Hz in the left ear and 207 Hz in the right — your brain cannot separate them. Instead, it perceives a third tone: the difference frequency of 7 Hz. This tone does not exist in the air; it is generated entirely within the brain itself.

This process is called the Frequency Following Response: the brain tends to synchronize its own electrical activity with external rhythms. Different frequency ranges are associated with different states of consciousness:

  • Delta (1–4 Hz) — deep sleep, deep regeneration
  • Theta (4–8 Hz) — drowsiness, meditation, emotional processing
  • Alpha (8–12 Hz) — relaxed alertness, calm focus
  • Beta (13–30 Hz) — active thinking, concentration
Headphones are essential. The left and right channels must reach each ear separately — over speakers the tones mix in the air before reaching the brain, and the effect cannot occur.

Research into binaural beats is promising but not yet conclusive. Raum·klang is not a medical device and makes no therapeutic claims.

What is Raum·klang?

Raum·klang is a free, ad-free browser app with binaural beats — built specifically for people with ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, ADHD and chronic illness. No download, no app store, no login required.

Is Raum·klang really free?

Yes — completely, permanently, without tricks. No subscription, no premium features, no paywall. The app is funded by Stefan Ebenhoch with the support of ITworx Solutions AT GmbH. Voluntary donations via BuyMeACoffee are welcome.

Is there a dedicated ME/CFS preset?

Yes. The ME/CFS preset uses delta waves at 3 Hz — the frequency range associated with deep sleep and deep regeneration. There is also a Crash Guard: after a configurable session duration (default: 30 min.) a warning appears to help avoid Post-Exertional Malaise (PEM).

Does Raum·klang help with fibromyalgia?

The fibromyalgia preset uses theta waves at 6 Hz, linked to pain processing in the limbic system. Raum·klang is not a medical device and does not replace medical treatment — but many people with chronic pain report relief through sound and relaxation techniques.

What is the Crash Guard?

A safety feature specifically for ME/CFS. After a configurable session duration (10–60 min.) a reminder appears: "Please plan a rest break." Post-Exertional Malaise (PEM) is one of the most dangerous ME/CFS symptoms — the Crash Guard helps you recognize overexertion.

Do I need an account?

No. The app works fully without registration (guest mode). With an account, your pain journal, mood log, and favorites are synced across devices — but this is entirely optional.

What is 432 Hz?

An alternative tuning: instead of the standard concert pitch of 440 Hz, instruments are tuned to 432 Hz. Some people find this warmer and more harmonious. Raum·klang offers this as an optional feature — the binaural frequency stays the same, only the base tone changes.

How does preset sharing work?

Logged-in users can share their current sound configuration as a public preset. Each shared preset gets an 8-character code. Others can enter this code to load the preset — even without an account.

Which browsers are supported?

All modern browsers that support the Web Audio API: Chrome, Firefox, Safari (desktop and iOS), Edge. Internet Explorer is not supported.

Is there a mobile app?

Raum·klang is currently available as a fully mobile-optimized web app. It can be installed on your iPhone home screen as a PWA. Native iOS and Android apps are planned.

How can I give feedback?
